Is Breaking Bad the most unpredictable show on television?
We know one thing about the ending of Breaking Bad – several main characters will die, and an M80 and a pellet of ricin will be involved in at least two of these deaths.
What we don’t know is who will prevail. Despite the show’s known unpredictability, thousands of fans, bloggers, and journalists continue to share plot predictions online, the vast majority of which agree that in the final episode, several of the main characters will come head-to-head in a life-or-death showdown.
I collected thousands of these online theories using a series of queries to capture tweets predicting various possible endings for Walt, Jesse, Skyler, Jack’s gang, and Saul. Through analysis of this data, I calculated percentages of the total volume of theories that predicted common outcomes.
Sadly, the results are most dire for our two main characters, Walt and Jesse, whom more than half of all Twitter theorists believe will faceoff in a final duel. However, fans of the show know that what the audience thinks will happen somehow never seems to follow through on the show; so maybe, the best way to read this chart is actually to look toward the predictions that are least common.
Either way you look at it, the chances of a happy ending are slim-to-none. See how your own predictions stack up to the masses, marvel at the array of possibilities that are all fair game this coming Sunday, or place bets with friends. But if you’re anything like me, you’ll embrace Breaking Bad‘s characteristic unpredictability and brace yourself for what is certain to be one of the most unforeseeable finales in television history.
